In 2 or 3 lessons Grades 6, to 8 students learn about the safety pin and other inventions.

The Story

Any child that likes gadgets will enjoy this package. Walter was a kid when he started inventing. A farm boy, he created things. He was a skinny kid that didn’t speak too well so factory owners didn’t take him seriously.

But, the sewing machine, a portable knife sharpener and a new fountain pen were among Walter Hunt’s inventions. But the safety pin is still with us today.

This account includes:

  • the diagrams of the 1849 patent for the safety pin and
  • discusses the improvements to the safety pin such as the lock pin.
  • The Word Study and Text Study follow. The Word Study deals with grammar and vocabulary. The text study deals with the story content.

Grades 6, 7 and 8 and their parents.  Parents can download, print in black and teach. Any parent can teach successfully using this package and my literacy and numeracy materials. The text discusses this famous 19th century American. It touches on his various inventions. He invented the first sewing machine, and suction shoes for circus performers. In 2 or 3 lessons, children get to know what a patent is. The 1849 patent diagram of the first safety pin is included.

Activities are divided into Word Study and Text Study. Included is

  • an introduction to sentence analysis (subject, verb, object).
  • Other activities involve forming verbs,
  • writing good answers to questions and
